Before I worked with Trista, I really had no idea what a professional genealogist does. My only introduction to genealogy was the Ancestry website. But after doing two brand photoshoots with Trista, my perspective has TOTALLY changed, and I’m excited to share our work together!
Understanding Trista’s work as a professional genealogist
Trista isn’t your ordinary genealogist. Her dedication goes beyond just doing simple Google searches — she ventures into libraries, sifts through archives, and conducts personal interviews with your family members to get to the bottom of your family history story.
This hands-on approach to uncovering family histories is what sets her apart. As her brand photographer, I was SO excited to figure out how to showcase her work in her photos.
Trista’s brand photography experience
We did a total of 2 photoshoots together. After doing the first one, we learned what style of photos she likes to use and doesn’t. We captured a lot more “formal” looks in the first session. Even though she looks fabulous and the photos are amazing, she learned she prefers to post photos in more casual outfits because it feels more like her.
Switching from formal clothes to casual clothes isn’t just about an changing an aesthetic — it’s about discovering Trista’s brand identity. Trista’s a very friendly, approachable person, and we wanted to communicate that in her wardrobe choices for her second photoshoot.
Lessons Learned
Trista learned how she wants to represent her personal brand through doing two photoshoots.
This is why it’s important to:
- Have a variety of outfits. If it’s your first time getting a brand photoshoot done, it’s hard to know what you really enjoy until you get the photos back and start using them on your website and on social media.
- Refresh your brand photos regularly. Your taste and style changes over time. If you are using outdated photos after you had a major wardrobe overhaul or hairstyle change, it might be time to get new brand photos done.

After working together, we created a library of brand photos that truly resonates with Trista’s audience. These images are more than just pictures; they are stories, each one reflecting the depth and dedication Trista brings to her work. They showcase not only her professionalism but her passion for genealogy and the profound impact understanding one’s heritage can have on their life.
